The forthcoming Broadway revival of Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful will begin previews at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Saturday evening, March 30, a day earlier than the previously announced start date of March 31. Opening night remains Tuesday, April 23, directed by Michael Wilson.
The Trip to Bountiful will star Cicely Tyson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Williams and Condola Rashad. The play centers on Carrie Watts (Tyson), an elderly woman who dreams of returning to her hometown of Bountiful, TX, one last time, against the wishes of her son (Gooding) and daughter-in-law (Williams).
The play began life as a 1953 NBC broadcast starring Lillian Gish and premiered on Broadway a year later. Geraldine Page won an Oscar for the 1985 film version, and Lois Smith starred in an acclaimed off-Broadway revival at Signature Theatre in 2005.
